Eihei-ji Temple (Fukui)

Eihei-ji is a main temple of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism, founded by Dogen in 1244, located in Yoshida district, Fukui prefecture.

Chokushi-mon Gate (gate for imperial envoys)

Godai-sugi, cedar trees of approximately 700 years old.

Shoro, the belfry with a great bell of five tons.

Ho-on-to, a pagoda in which copies of Buddhist sutra are housed.

The quiet precincts surrounded by a lot of cedar trees.

Chujaku-mon Gate, the gate between San-mon Gate and Butsu-den (Buddha hall).

The halls of the temple built on the slope are connected by covered corridors or stone steps.

Echizen Take-ningyo no Sato  (Echizen bamboo doll village) close to Eihei-ji temple.
It's said to be only place which make dolls of bamboo in Japan.

Bamboo Hair   It's said to be the feature of Echizen Bamboo Doll to make hairs by thinly cutting bamboos.

Izumo-taisha (Shimane)

Izumo-taisha, Izumo Grand Shrine, located in Izumo, Shimane, is one of the most ancient and important shinto shrines in Japan.
Honden, the main hall at 24 m high, is designated as a National Treasure of Japan.

Kagura-den, Kagura Hall with large shimenawa (sacred straw rope) which is 13 meters long and 5 tons in weight.

Mizusawa-dera temple in Ikaho Onsen (Gunma)

Mizusawa-dera, also referred to as Mizusawa Kanzeon, is a temple located in Ikaho Onsen, Shibukawa city, Gunma prefecture.
It's said that it was founded in the era of Emperor Suiko of more than 1300 years ago.

Stone steps overlooked from Nio-mon gate

Ryuo-Benzaiten     The sign says this water is sacred fountains and good for making a fortune, curing disease, living long.

Frogs are worshiped here because they saved people from food shortage in the past.

Hondo, a main hall, at the right of it, Rokkakudo with revolving six statues of Jizo, 'Rokujizo'.

The 2nd source of hot springs      A jetting port can be observed through the glassed cover.

Here are the bust of Dr.Erwin Bälz and a big outdoor hot spring.

Yamadera Risshaku-ji temple (Yamagata)

Risshakuji temple, referred to as Yamadera, located in Yamagata city, Yamagata prefecture, is a temple of Tendai sect founded in 860 by Jikaku Daishi. It's a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty and Historic Site.

Godai-Do, one of the temple halls, at approximately 400m above sea level, as seen from JR station.


Climbing stone steps of near 1000 steps from the foot of the mountain to Oku-no-In.


Shoso-In, one of the temple halls, as seen from Niomon Gate.

Nyoho-Do, also called Oku-no-In because it's on the terminal of long stone steps.

Kaizan-Do hall and Nokyo-Do hall (red) on the Hyaku-jo-Iwa, a big rock.  On the upper right of them Godai-Do hall built in stage style.

Nokyo-Do, a hall stored sutra copies.   Kaizan-Do, a hall which has been dedicated to Jikaku Daishi, a founder of Yamadera.

Nokyo-Do is the oldest building in Yamadera.  The grave of Jikaku Daishi is just under it..

Syaka-ga-Mine, a rock hill for training.




Godai-Do is built in stage style with panoramic views.  It is dedicated to Godai Myoo (the five great myoo).

Mt.Yahiko-yama & Yahiko Shrine (Niigata)

Yahiko Shrine at the foot of Mt.Yahiko-yama located in Niigata was the ichinomiya, a chief shinto shrine of former Echigo Province.

A huge chinquapin, a sacred tree in Yahiko Shrine

Zuishin-mon gate

Main building enshrined 'Ameno-Kaguyama-no-Mikoto'.   Mt.Yahiko-yama is behind it.



The top of Mt.Yahiko-yama is 638m above sea level, 5 minutes by ropeway from the Sanroku station close to Yahiko Shrine.

 Panorama Tower, an observatory at 100m high, revolving and moving up and down.

From Mt.Yahiko-yama, Japan Sea and Sado Island can be seen in the distance.

Echigo Plain, the most rice-producing region in Japan.
