Shirakawa-go (Gifu)

Japanese  ⇒ Nippon burari SHOT
Shirakawa-go located in Shirakawa-mura, Gifu prefecture, is known for gassho-style houses (a house with a steep thatched roof)
It's designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in Japan and a World Heritage in UNESCO.



An attic room of a gassho-style house      It was formerly used for silkworm raising.


Ogimachi- shiroato Observatory         Gassho-style houses concentrated district can be viewed widely.

Magome-juku (Gifu)

Japanese  ⇒ Nippon burari SHOT
Magome-juku located in Nakatsugawa city, Gifu prefecture, was one of 69 stations on Nakasendo, an ancient road connected Kyoto and Edo in Edo era.

Kousatsu-ba , a street bulletin board which bans and notifications from government were written in Edo era.

Magome-juku was a post town built on both side of a steep slope way.



Toson Memorial Museum       Magome-juku was the birthplace and childhood home of noted author Shimazaki Toson.

Masugata,   a hook shaped road for defenses from enemy invasion.

Restored old water mill       Nowadays it generates electricity to light up nearby streets.

Hida Takayama (Gifu)

Takayama city located in Gifu prefecture is popularly called Hida Takayama in reference to the old Hida Province.

Traditional street in Takayama       It's an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings in Japan.

A traditional townhouse in the last Edo period     Now it's a restaurant for local cuisines.

Takayama Jinya is designated as a Historic Site in Japan.

Ouchi-juku (Fukushima)

Japanese  ⇒ Nippon burari SHOT
Ouchi-juku, located in Shimogo-machi, Fukushima prefecture, was formerly a post-town on the old Aizu-nishi-kaido Road in Edo era.

There are more than thirty houses with thatched roofs in Ouchi-juku.

Ouchi-juku designated as a Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings.





A tasty buckwheat can be eaten here, because Shimogo-machi has long been producing high-quality buckwheat.


Negi-soba, a famous food in Ouchi-juku, is a buckwheat which will be eaten with one long onion instead chopsticks.

A souvenir shop sells a variety of local folk crafts.

Eihei-ji Temple (Fukui)

Eihei-ji is a main temple of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism, founded by Dogen in 1244, located in Yoshida district, Fukui prefecture.

Chokushi-mon Gate (gate for imperial envoys)

Godai-sugi, cedar trees of approximately 700 years old.

Shoro, the belfry with a great bell of five tons.

Ho-on-to, a pagoda in which copies of Buddhist sutra are housed.

The quiet precincts surrounded by a lot of cedar trees.

Chujaku-mon Gate, the gate between San-mon Gate and Butsu-den (Buddha hall).

The halls of the temple built on the slope are connected by covered corridors or stone steps.

Echizen Take-ningyo no Sato  (Echizen bamboo doll village) close to Eihei-ji temple.
It's said to be only place which make dolls of bamboo in Japan.

Bamboo Hair   It's said to be the feature of Echizen Bamboo Doll to make hairs by thinly cutting bamboos.
